What is the Terac deck straightening system?

The Terac is a turnkey induction heating system used for deck and bulkhead straightening in shipyards and dry docks. It requires only an electricity supply to begin work.

The Terac uses electromagnetic induction to heat steel from the inside out. It operates from a single side of the plate, with no gas, no open flame, and no combustion fumes. Heating is rapid, precise, and automatically stops when the steel reaches the Curie temperature, making it impossible to overheat magnetic steel.

The system is containerised for easy movement between vessels or work sites. A standard working radius of 45 metres from the base unit (extendable to 60 m) means one unit can serve a large section of a vessel without repositioning.

What is induction deck straightening?

Induction deck straightening uses electromagnetic induction to apply controlled, localized heat to steel structures. As heated zones cool and contract, they reduce distortion and return the material to its intended shape. Compared to flame heating, the process is faster, safer, and more precise.

Hull and main deck straightening

Correct distortion caused by welding or impact on flat steel deck plates with single-sided access only. The deck inductor unit (approx. 10 kg) is placed directly on the surface. No need to access the underside. Typical application: post-weld distortion correction on new builds and repairs.
 
Bulkheads
Terac works just as well on bulkheads and other vertical structures as it does on decks.

Vertical bulkhead straightening

The 2 kg handheld transformer allows operators to heat vertical or overhead panels without repositioning the base unit. Terac works just as effectively on bulkheads and other vertical structures as it does on horizontal decks.
 
Confined areas

Hard-to-reach and overhead sections 

The handheld transformer’s 10 m cable and low weight (approx. 2 kg) allow a single operator to work independently in confined or overhead areas far from the base unit. For added ergonomic comfort, it can be suspended from a balancer attached to a magnet or wire rope.

Multi-vessel and multi-site operation

The complete Terac system — frequency converter, cooling system, operator panel, and inductor units — fits inside a standard shipping container. This makes it straightforward to move between dry-dock bays, quayside locations, or entirely different shipyards with minimal downtime.

How induction straightening works

The Terac is a straightforward system to operate. Most new operators are productive within approximately two hours of training. The four-step process applies to both deck and bulkhead applications.

Position the inductor

Place the deck inductor unit on the distorted steel surface — no clamping or mechanical fixturing required. For bulkheads or confined spaces, use the handheld transformer unit instead.

Set power and timing

Adjust power level and dwell time using the controls mounted on the handle. No separate calibration equipment needed. Settings are intuitive and consistent between jobs.

Heat the steel

Electromagnetic induction heats the steel from the inside out in seconds. An 8 mm deck is heated in approximately 8 seconds. The system automatically stops at the Curie temperature — preventing overheating.

Straighten and cool

The heated steel is pushed or pressed straight while at temperature, then allowed to cool. The corrected shape is retained on cooling. The process is repeated as needed across the affected area.
